Bio

Decson Chairs Jr. is a dedicated student at Wichita State University, pursuing a dual major in Instrumental Music Education under the guidance of trombone instructor Matt Blauer, and Biological Science with a Biomedical Emphasis. He possesses a deep passion for bridging the gap between medicine and traditional Native music. As a proud member of the Great Nation of the Muscogee Creek, Decson actively engages with his community in Wichita, Kansas, volunteering at food drives, community outreach events, and working in a community garden. Currently, he is the President-Elect of the Indigenous Student Collective and the Vice President of The Union of African Descent. With a commendable 3.56 GPA, Decson earned a spot on the dean’s list during his first semester in college. His commitment is unwavering as he strives to ensure that every Native student at Wichita State has the best opportunity to succeed. This opportunity inspires me to strive for excellence in my academic pursuits and to stay dedicated to my community. The Native Forward Program has impacted my life in many ways, particularly by instilling a strong sense of responsibility to support both my community and future generations. In alignment with this commitment, I have decided to take on a larger leadership role by running for president of Wichita State University’s Indigenous Student Collective, stepping away from my current position as Events Coordinator. As President-Elect, I am organizing a statewide Indigenous High School Student Summit aimed at bringing together Native students to encourage their pursuit of higher education. I would like to conclude with my personal statement: “Success is not a goal but an inevitability for those who seek it out.”
